SAMe and the Human Body
SAMe (pronounced “Sammy”), or S-Adenosyl-Methionine, is a natural substance synthesized from methionine (an amino acid) in the body. SAMe is a compound that is found naturally in every living being. One of the most important functions of SAMe is its role as a methyl donor. As a methyl donor, SAMe carries and donates methyl molecules to various parts of the body. This process is what enables many cells in the body to work. It is therefore critical to have adequate levels of SAMe in order for the body to work properly.
What does SAMe have to do with the liver?
There are three major functions that SAMe is involved in the human body: Transsulfuration, transmethylation, and aminopropylation. The first two are critical for proper liver function.
Through the process of transsulfuration, naturally occurring SAMe is converted into a compound called glutathione, a potent antioxidant and liver detoxification agent. It is an essential compound which plays a major role in protecting hepatocytes (liver cells) from waste products that the liver removes from the blood stream. Maintaining adequate levels of SAMe is therefore critical for healthy liver function.
There are other roles that SAMe plays in the liver as well. The transmethylation process – where SAMe acts as a methyl donor – is another process that is responsible for maintaining healthy liver function. In this process, natural SAMe works to improve phospholipid production which promotes better bile flow through the liver’s cell membranes. Proper bile flow enables the detoxification process in the liver to function correctly.
Why Supplement with Nutralife SAMe?
Normally, the body produces enough SAMe on its own from the amino acid methionine. Transsulferation and transmethylation can occur on their own. However, as people age (beginning as early as the teenage years), SAMe levels can decrease. This can potentially cause those two processes (plus many more!) to slow down, or stop performing sufficiently. Taking SAMe as a supplement may help replenish low levels, and may help the body resume its normal function. Healthy levels of SAMe can help maintain healthy liver function and a healthy you!
How to Take SAMe?
SAMe should be taken on an empty stomach for best absorption. Dose may be divided over the course of the day, (i.e. before breakfast and before dinner.)
Recommended Dosage: 400 mg/day. You may gradually increase or decrease your dose as your symptoms improve. SAMe is safe to take up to 1600 mg/day.
Safety and Interactions
SAMe has no known serious side effects. In rare cases SAMe may cause slight stomach upset. This can usually be rectified by taking SAMe together with a light snack. There are no known adverse interactions between SAMe and any prescription medication. However, if you are taking any medication, including prescription antidepressants, please consult your physician before taking SAMe. If you suffer from bi-polar disorder, or are manic depressive, do not take SAMe. If you are pregnant or lactating, please consult a doctor before using SAMe.
