Product Description
What is SAMe?
SAMe, or S-Adenosyl-Methionine, is a natural substance synthesized from methionine (an amino acid) in the body. In fact, SAMe is found in every living organism.
SAMe and the Human Body
Naturally occurring SAMe is involved in over forty biochemical reactions in the body by playing a key role in the methylation process. Methylation is a basic chemical reaction that triggers many vital biological responses throughout the body. As a methyl donor, SAMe donates methyl groups to different molecules. This process helps synthesize neurotransmitters, aids in regulating the expression of our genes and hormone activity, and helps maintain the flexibility of cell membranes.*
SAMe and Mood
As a methyl donor, naturally occurring SAMe is involved in the production of a number of neurotransmitters important in regulating mood. SAMe also helps in the methylation of phospholipids helping to keep cell membranes receptive to neurotransmitters. SAMe can also boost the production of phosphatidylserine, a phospholipid that plays a role in memory and mood.*
SAMe and Joint Health
In studies, naturally occurring SAMe was shown to play a role in the production of chondrocytes, the cartilage producing cells in joints. SAMe may help maintain the efficacy of proteoglycans, molecules important to the lubrication of joints.*
SAMe and the Liver
Through a process called transulferation, naturally occurring SAMe may help the body’s cells produce glutathione. Glutathione is an essential compound necessary to protect the liver from oxidative damage. Maintaining proper glutathione levels can be beneficial for maintaining liver function.*
Supplemental SAMe
The human body normally produces SAMe on its own from the amino acid methionine. However, as people age (beginning as early as the teenage years), their body’s ability to produce adequate levels of SAMe diminishes. Therefore, a supplemental form of SAMe may be beneficial.
An exogenous (produced outside of the body) form of SAMe was developed in Italy in the mid-seventies. SAMe has been the subject of numerous clinical studies and has been prescribed by doctors in Europe for over two decades. SAMe has also been favorably reviewed in major medical journals.*
Safety and Interactions
One of the advantages of SAMe is its remarkable safety profile. SAM-e has been safely administered for over 40 years. In very rare cases SAMe may cause some slight stomach irritation. This can usually be rectified by taking SAMe together with a light snack.
There are no known adverse interactions between SAMe and any prescription medication. However, if you are taking any medication please consult your physician before taking SAMe. Warning: If you are currently taking prescription anti-depressants, consult your physician before using SAMe. If you suffer from bipolar (manic) depression, do not use this product.
